TMD or TMJ injuries occur when there is a misalignment of the temporal bones in the jaw. Located in front of the ear, this misalignment may be the result of a car accident, severe blow to the head, whiplash or a fall, for example. With injury to the jaw, the muscles in the neck, head and back can be affected leading to TMD. It can also result from severe stress and grinding of the teeth at night that puts strain on the temporomandibular joint. Temporomandibular joint disorders can affect chewing, yawning, swallowing, eating and talking. It can also cause the person to experience severe mouth and head pain, along with debilitating migraines. Side effects can also include clicking with chewing where the jaw can be heard “popping” as the person chews and/or swallows their food. Swallowing can also be affected. Depending on the severity of the TMD, treatment may include surgeries and mouth guards to minimize the pain and pressure on the temporomandibular joint.
