Ankle injuries are often the result of overuse with work, slip and fall injuries and job site accidents. Work-related injuries may be the result of climbing stairs, standing for long periods or carrying weight-bearing items incorrectly. Specific injury symptoms include swelling, pain and inflammation to tendons and ligaments. Treatment for injuries and pain may include non-surgical treatment that will minimize pain and restore full joint function. Surgery may be necessary if the injury is caused by a trauma as surgery may stabilize the ankle joint and thereby allow full return of normal activities. If the trimalleolar fracture is the result of an acute injury, this Grade 3 type of sprain can be confirmed with x-ray findings and physical assessment may confirm the unstable ankle. With chronic instability where the ankle gives out, surgery may be the only option. Treatment for ankle buckling may include physical therapy, braces, splints, and casts.
